Monday 24 March is World TB Day Mustadafin Foundation partnered the local Health Clinic in Tafelsig in a Campaign to raise TB awareness and encourage treatment.

Many people don’t realise that TB has claimed more than 1 Billion lives over the past two centuries. That is 10 times more deaths than all other infectious diseases together. What people need to know: Anyone can get TB whether or not you have HIV. However, if you are HIV-positive, you have a much higher chance of getting TB because the virus weakens your immune system. That is why it is very important that if you have HIV you need to test for TB.

Our teams conducted HIV and TB testing in Tafelsig and shared valuable information about the disease. It is estimated that one-third of the 40 million people living with HIV/AIDS worldwide are co-infected with TB. The good news is that TB is completely curable, even if you have HIV, and for most people that means taking TB treatment every day for 180 days…

Scary facts that can save lives!

1. Knowledge is power People with HIV are up to 10 times more likely to develop TB in a given year than HIV-negative people; One sneeze by a person with TB can release up to 40,000 infectious droplets, which can then be breathed in by other people.

2. TB is curable if you complete the full treatment and stick to the instructions by your health care worker! It is possible to cure TB in people with HIV, It takes six months or longer of treatment to cure TB.

You can help to prevent spreading TB by:

  • Covering your mouth and nose with your arm/elbow sleeve when you cough or sneeze;
  • If you need to get rid of spit when coughing, use a tissue and throw it away, cover the spit with soil or spit in a box covered by a lid, then burn the box afterwards;
  • Washing your hands immediately after coughing or sneezing; Opening windows and doors for to let fresh air in; and
  • Taking the treatment everyday for 180 days or until you are cured of TB.
