Mustadafin Website _Mustadafin’s impact on poverty alleviation cannot be negated

Reducing poverty is seen as the world’s greatest challenge, and in South Africa –  poverty is counted as one of the country’s triple threats.  The other two are unemployment and inequality. The future of South Africa depends on the country’s ability to end social deprivation and manage environmental stress, enabling its people to live in a space where it is both safe and just. Sadly, that scenario does not seem close to becoming a reality.

South Africa now has close to 19 million citizens surviving on permanent government social grants. Additionally, an average of 8.5 million beneficiaries are receiving the R350 Covid-19 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant

As of 2023, an individual living in South Africa on less than R1 058/m  was considered poor. According to South African national standards, individuals having less than  R760/m available for food were living below the poverty line. Over half of South Africans live below the national poverty line and more than 10% live in extreme poverty, on less than  R15.58 per day.

Therefore, the  impact of the Mustadafin Foundation on the most vulnerable in society, cannot be underestimated

“And they feed, for the love of Allah, The indigent, The Orphan and the Captive, we feed you For the sake of Allah alone No reward do we desire from you, nor thanks’ (Quran 76:8, 9)

According to Mustadafin  Foundation Director Ghairunisa Johnstone Cassiem, the organisation feeds over 27,000 people per day – and that is not only in the Cape Metropole. “One of the things we are proudest of is our distributions and assistance all round South Africa, to all persons – regardless of gender, colour, age or creed. South Africa is a beautiful country, but it is also the most unequal country in the world. This is most evident when disaster strikes, and the Winter of 2024 was filled with natural disasters. The Western Cape experienced periods of intense cold, heavy downpours of rain, fierce winds and raging floods. Those living in bricks and mortar homes were affected, and those living in shacks and makeshift shelters, even more so. As always, as per our organisational ethos and with the assistance of our committed staff and amazing group of volunteers – we went into areas most negatively affected by the storms, and our teams were able to provide much-needed relief in terms of food, blankets – and in many places, drinkable water. Irrespective of weather conditions, people go hungry in South Africa every day. We appeal to those who are able to support our feeding schemes, to so – whether in cash, kind or even volunteering to be a part of our teams on the ground”
