The festive season is traditionally known as the season of giving. Capetonians will have the opportunity to donate and put a smile on the faces of disadvantaged children when the NPO Mustadafin foundation hosts its annual positive day event at Mnandi swimming pool on Wednesday 10 December. More than 300 children, aged three to 14, from the organization’s various programmes will enjoy a day of treat and fun. Most of the children come from poor, destitute and broken families, and have never received a gift in their life.  “Positive day is an annual celebration for children who have conquered many things during their lives. It’s [all] about positivity. We also give them safety messages to make sure they are well equipped for the festive season,” says the Foundations director Ghairunisa Johnstone Cassiem.

“These safety measures are focused on drug awareness, how to be safe in the water and general safety measures when guardians are not around. It’s also a day when a child can be a child and not have to worry about their [living circumstances].”

Many of these kids don’t know or met their biological parents. “We work with [them] during the year, give them a gift, meal and all the love and support that we can,” says Ghairunisa. “Giving them a toy is a token of making them [feel] special and loved.”

A total of 300 toys will be distributed on the day and 150 toys will be handed out on Christmas.

The foundation calls Capetonians to donate toys to be distributed to the children.
